Come to Eduignite at Haeata

When: Monday 3 April
Time: 6pm
Where: Haeata Community Campus, 240 Breezes Rd, Wainoni
What: Share a five-minute talk with auto-advancing slides OR come along to listen and connect with Canterbury educators.

What is EduIgnite? Ignite Evenings are held in over 100 cities worldwide. At the events Ignite presenters share their personal and professional passions, using 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds for a total of just five minutes. EduIgnite is an Ignite Evening run by educators, focused on education.
The rules:
  • Drinks and nibbles are always provided, and anyone is welcome
  • Attendance at your first EduIgnite evening is ‘no strings attached’
  • Attendance at your second EduIgnite Evening requires you to do one of two things: i) bring a friend, or ii) present an EduIgnite talk.
“Fast-paced, fun, thought-provoking, social, local, global—Ignite is all of these and more. It’s a high-energy evening of 5-minute talks by people who have an idea—and the guts to get onstage and share it with their hometown crowd. Run by local volunteers who are connected through the global Ignite network, Ignite is a force for raising the collective IQ and building connections in each city. And, via streaming and archived videos of local talks, local Ignites share all that knowledge and passion with the world.” (http://ignite.oreilly.com/)

31 Days of Blogging

We are also still looking for anyone who would like to contribute to "31 Days of Blogging". If you would like to write anything, or if you have already written something that you are happy for us to share via this blog, please let us know via chchednet@gmail.com.

Twitter Chats

Don't forget that there are lots of great education conversations happening on Twitter. For example, #edchatNZ is 8:30-9:30pm every second Thursday.

The next #scichatNZ chat (8:30pm, 18 October) is a collaboration with #scicommNZ about engagement and being run by two Canterbury-based educators (Matt Nicoll and Dr Victoria Metcalf).

If you strike gold in any chats or other collaboration on Twitter (anywhere, actually), please retweet and/or share this gold with the #ChchED hashtag, so the rest of us get to see it too.

Facebook

If Twitter and blogs are not your thing, Gin Thorner has set up a Facebook Group to help people keep connected, collaborate, and to be aware of events.

Email us via chchednet@gmail.com if you would like to be added to this group.

Chched Maker Event

Early in Term 3, the Chched Team decided to hold a MakerEd Event, gathering up eight Christchurch teachers who are doing amazing things in the MakerEd field and cajoling them into sharing their expertise with other Christchurch teachers. We opted for a two hour after school gathering, with two rounds of short opt-in workshops. We were thrilled that all the teachers we asked jumped on board, willingly giving up their time to share their knowledge with us.

Workshops on offer were

  • Coding with Paul Sibson of Fendalton School
  • Beebots with Liz Fairhall of Selwyn House
  • Makey Makey with Nathan Maclennan of Breens Intermediate
  • Papertronics with Sarah Coursey of St Margaret's
  • 3D Design and Printing with Linda Chong of St Margaret's
  • Advanced Scratch with Blake Luffy of Amuri Area School
  • Robotics in your Maths Programme with Jill Pears of Sumner School
  • Circuitry with Liz Fairhall of Selwyn House

We were unsure how the event would be received, given that it was a mid-week, mid- Winter gathering but we were thrilled by the response. We had a fantastic number of sign ups meaning we actually had to close the registrations a few days before the event.

We were fortunate to be able to hold the event at the stunning new learning centre at St Margaret's College. The workshops were designed to be a taster; an opportunity for teachers to play. The intention was not to answer all questions about a particular element of MakerEd but rather to open eyes to the possibilities and form supportive connections with other educators.

The feedback from both workshop leaders and participants was overwhelmingly positive. It was a fantastic reminder of the great things that are happening in Christchurch schools and the growth mindset teachers display as they strive to provide awesome experiences for the learners of Canterbury.

Watch this space for more great learning opportunities from Chched.
