The Google Challenge

Over the couple of months our IT Vision Group at St Margaret's College has gathered student voice on learning with digital technologies. As a Digital Learning Facilitator, it was interesting for me to learn that many students would like more hands on support in learning how to use digital tools in their learning. We often assume that our students are “digital natives” and pick it all up quickly. Our learners have indicated in their feedback that this isn’t always the case.

As we enter Term 4 and think about our planning for 2016 this feedback got me thinking about how we can provide more support for our new girls coming into school, particularly at Year 9. Being both BYOD and a Google Apps for Education school (GAFE) it is important for our learners to be able to utilise these tools effectively, as a result I decided to create the SMC Google Challenge. Paul Sibson at Fendalton School has implemented a digital badging platform and as part of this Glenys Williams created a number of Google Badges. Seeing Glenys’ work along with Google for Education's Training Centre inspired my thinking for our SMC Google Challenge.

The Challenge focuses on Google Apps essentials from Gmail through to Google Forms. The idea is to keep adding to the list.


I want to create an incentive for the girls that will hook them into the Challenge and there has been a real buzz surrounding the work that we are doing with 3D printing in our Centre for Innovation. The girls love it! In Year 9 Product Design students create charms for a bracelet and this has been incredibly popular. I decided to take the charm idea and to arrange for one of our “Gadget Girls” to design and 3D print individual charms for each component of the Google Challenge. Here are the Google Apps charms created by "Gadget Girl", Emma (Year 9).


I also want the SMC Google Challenge to be able to be carried out similarly to the Google Certified Educator/Trainer course. By that I mean all support can all be accessed online in the form of help videos. With the assistance of our TechStars we created a series of videos for the girls to access as they work their way through the Challenge.

Our SMC TechStars really have been stars! They are a group of girls passionate about learning with digital technologies. Their aim is to turn “IT Geek to IT Chic!” This group of girls have created a Tech Blog and started posting an “app of the week” and other tech tips. I love learning with these sparky girls. What has been really exciting is our TechStars have taken ownership of the Google Challenge and are about to launch a trial to a few willing Middle School Girls in Term 4. I am looking forward to getting the girls' feedback to support with next steps!

Freemium: Students Can Be The Winners On The Day

In my role as Director of ICT at St Andrew's College I get to see lots of great products in the ICT sector, both the latest hardware (such as new tablets aimed at education) and software (cloud based productivity suites are the in thingcurrently for schools). I also get to step back from the coal face from time to time and observe some of the bigger trends happening in ICT & Education and there are two obvious ones:
  1. BYOD – Bring Your Own Device. More and more schools are exploring how they can allow (or in some cases require) students to bring a laptop/tablet/smartphone to school and use it as a tool for their education. There are literally tens of thousands of blogs about this, so I'm not going to write about that today.
  2. Freemium – Defined as "a business model, especially on the Internet, whereby basic services are provided free of charge while more advanced features must be paid for" This is a growing trend in education and, as the blog title suggests, students will be the ultimate winners from this.
The concept of Freemium is probably best known as starting within the Apple App Store and it has spread rapidly from there. Developers, keen for you to try out their apps, give away a limited feature set, be that the first few levels of a game for example, and if you love it, you pay the full price for the app.


How Is This Impacting Schools?

Major players in ICT have long recognised that exposing students to their products early on increases the chances of them continuing to use their products when they leave school. Earlier this year I attended a conference where Francis Valintine from The Mindlab by Unitec named five companies that are likely to dominate education in the near future. These were (in no particular order):
  • Apple
  • Facebook
  • Microsoft
  • Amazon
  • Google

Many New Zealand schools are already availing themselves of the Ministry of Education negotiated contract with Microsoft allowing for very affordable access to Offiec365 and associated products. Other schools have gone for the free option of Google Apps For Education (GAFE). Both products are excellent, and allow schools to deliver Enterprise quality email, cloud collaboration services, online storage and backup options and a huge range of additional features from third party developers that plug in to these core products. It has massively reduced the workload for school ICT technicians for example: not having to run a local mail server and spam filter for students and staff.


Ben Kepes, writing for Forbes.com, described the Google/Apple/Microsoft rush for education as a "war" – they are certainly battling for the hearts and minds of students, hoping that their loyalty to a product will continue on into tertiary study and, ultimately, the workplace. Indeed, I've even come across ICT technicians from different schools exclaiming incredulously "What? You've gone with [product x]?? I can't believe it when [product y] gives you 10x that storage space for free!!"

And so it goes on …


Should We Be Concerned?

The answer to that question is not a clear cut yes or no – it's more like a "maybe." With more and more companies offering free or heavily discounted products to schools, we should in theory be seeing increased choice around what tools are used for the best educational outcomes. Paradoxically, however, the opposite is happening as each major vendor creates an ecosystem where their products play nicest together. As these ecosystems grow ever more encompassing there becomes less compelling reasons for schools to explore great products outside of those provided within the ecosystem.

To highlight just how much focus these vendors are pushing a widening product set, many traditional software only companies are now releasing hardware products to complete their ecosystem:
  • Microsoft: long history of operating systems and office suites, now offering hardware like the Surface Pro 3 tablet
  • Google: started out as a search engine and then developed a mobile operating system called Android and then ChromeOS for running on laptops. They have released their own ChromeBook called Pixel
  • Apple: already a hardware and software company, they needed a cloud based productivity suite to complete their ecosystem and introduced iCloud
Ultimately, schools have to make a choice which ecosystem they enter and straddling two at once becomes challenging. Towards the end of Term 3 I organised some of staff to present to senior leaders from a range of schools throughout New Zealand on how we are using OneNote in Maths and English. Afterwards, a number of the guests from other schools asked how they too could implement OneNote in their schools, only to realise they were a GAFE school and didn't have the Microsoft licensing to affordably do this.

Therein lies the problem.

It's not that Office365 is better than Google Apps for Education – both are tremendous products and as schools, we should all be incredibly grateful we have access to these. It's more that in being spoilt for choice for free or heavily subsidised product offerings, it's not always easy to run across multiple ecosystems.


Conclusion:

I wrote in a recent blog post that great integration of technology in a classroom should see it fade into the background:

Whilst the phrase "ubiquitousness of technology" is over used, this lesson did demonstrate that when used effectively, the technology is not at the forefront of the lesson. It was not gimmicky or flashy, instead it provided functional improvement to what was already a great lesson.


Schools are in an incredible position that they've never really experienced before where major players in ICT are literally giving away their products to them or using a freemium model for base services. On top of that, there is the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) community offerings such as the very popular learning management system (LMS) called Moodle.

At a time of such rich pickings, our focus should not be solely on [product x] or [product y], but squarely on the teaching and learning practices that authentically integrate whatever the chosen technology is into the lesson.

When this occurs, students will indeed be winners on the day.

The Benefits of "Going Google"

Connected – 

Being only three years into primary teaching, I thought I would spend a bit of time consolidating what I had learnt on placements, prepare more resources so that I could better differentiate, and develop those killer spelling and handwriting programmes (not).
It was all going well. I liked my school, my class, and my colleagues. I felt like I was getting better at meeting needs, but still there was this nagging feeling that I didn’t quite know how I was going to get the students to take control of their own learning as much as I had hoped. Surely, I could add better value as more of a guide and less of a director.

 And there were those reluctant writers, the ones who found it hard to take pride in their written work because it looked like a centipede had walked through a bunch of iron filings and then gone ballistic on their page. There were also those books to deal with: books left at home or lost; finding the work to give feedback; and trying to ignore all the surface features, which were barriers to the ideas that dwelt inside the scrawl. I had always been super tech-savvy, but didn’t get terribly enthused by the thought of having a class of 30 with six devices, producing the occasional Powerpoint, I-Movie or Storybird.

Serendipitously, we had just got a BYOD network layer running and the SNUpgrade. Little by little, we increased the number of devices in the class; half a dozen children started bringing a variety from home, I gave out my personal laptop and my work laptop, and we went out on raiding parties each morning, borrowing devices from generous and tolerant colleagues (sincere thanks and apologies). Over the space of a term or so, we have almost got to the point where we can get 1:1 device coverage for a large part of the morning.
We began a transition to a fully digital literacy programme. We now plan our writing on mind-mapping apps, draft on Google Docs, and often publish on Google Slides. I make all our reading activities as GDocs, which the children can access on any device and from any connected location. Parents can see exactly what their children are working on, and can see my feedback and next steps through the comments feature in GDocs. I can see children working on their writing at home. Many a Sunday afternoon, I log on to find children working on independent research or other literacy tasks.   
 Perhaps the most obvious change has been in our writing programme. If a writer is struggling for ideas or feedback, it is easy to assemble a team of quick experts who can open the “struggler’s” writing and type suggestions directly in. Within a few minutes, the writer can have four or five, or even 10 suggestions to help them over the particular roadblock. What is more, previously reluctant writers now find themselves part of expert groups. The initial surprise on one boy’s face was priceless – his ideas creative, spelling atrocious, grammar very average, and handwriting almost illegible, he was not accustomed to being asked to contribute to and comment on the work of his classmates as an expert.    
I now have a class of year four children whose overall engagement has skyrocketed and who are more (and more-productively) interactive than previously. For those concerned that 1:1 devices will lessen interaction and collaboration, my experience has been the complete opposite. The previously engaged are now better enabled and the less engaged are now more so.
But, perhaps the greatest personal reward was unanticipated. As the class has become more accustomed to automated feedback on some of the surface features, and has started using digital tools for research, my role has changed markedly. I’ve never been busier, but it’s a fulfilling busy and the reason I got into teaching: I have gradually removed myself as a source of support for inquiries that the children have the tools to resolve themselves. I now feel that I am adding value by putting a far greater proportion of my time into helping children develop questioning skills and deeper thinking. I am trying to build a more personalised pathway by using varied life skills and broad general knowledge to give students gentle suggestion and guidance for further inquiry so that they can continue to follow their own curiosity.

Although it is taking me time to build my own literacy resources, for those who are daunted by the idea of creating their own, there is a great community of digital teachers who share. A move to digital learning doesn’t require teachers to provide screes of self-generated digital content to teach a whole bunch of unfamiliar skills. It just requires that we find quality resources to teach those same information filtering and processing skills that we have always taught.

Coming into 2014 I was convinced that the future of my year three teaching practice lay in the fancy short-throw projector that sat proudly above my whiteboard. I had spent the previous year coming to grips with Activinspire, playing around with what the software could do, and now felt like I had it down. Video clips at a click, instant and permanent records of classroom discussions, shared examples of student work that we could modify as a class - this was the future of education. 

Then Simon and Google Drive came and interrupted my best laid plans….

After seeing what Simon and his class had accomplished in a very short period of time by going Google, I knew that I wanted in on the action. I loved the idea of instant feedback, of effortless collaboration, and of marking work in a way that students would actually see and care about. But most of all, I loved the idea of a fluid classwork structure, where students learned to manage their time productively in order to complete tasks both at school and at home. I knew that I liked all of these things, what I didn’t know was how my year three students would take to them. 

I had a ton of questions. Do year three children need to still be writing in pencil, or do we go fully digital? Are we pushing this too early? Is too much ‘screen time’ something that I should be worried about? Did my students even have the basic computer literacy skills necessary to go down this path? I talked to colleagues and to parents of students in my room to try to find answers to these and other related questions. With (mostly) positive responses backing me up, I arrived at what I think to be a good transitional stepping stone that guides the students from pencil and paper to digital literacy. 

Every week exactly half of the students in the class work with 1:1 devices during writing sessions
(Google Docs and Google Slides predominantly). The following week, the other half of the class use devices for their writing. The writing topic stays the same for both computer and pencil/paper groups, as does the success criteria. Our literacy programme is conducted in a similar hybrid fashion with the reading texts given out to the students as normal (journals, StoryBytes etc), but with follow up tasks prepared on the drive for the students to complete in a given timeframe (normally a week). Tasks are divided into mandatory and optional categories, and students are encouraged to organise themselves effectively so that they can complete what they need to in the time given. Other curriculum areas see opportunities for the students to collaborate on the drive, researching topics and creating links from shared documents to information on the web.


So has it worked? Absolutely. We began this programme toward the beginning of term three and I can certainly say that I completely underestimated how quickly the students would pick this stuff up. We had a week or so of confusion and the picking up of basic computer skills, but after that the rate at which these year three children learned the ins and outs of the system was very quick indeed. Quite apart from the things that I suspected would be huge advantages of this system (peer/teacher feedback, student engagement, fluid classwork structure etc), it is the unexpected benefits that really provide the greatest joy for me. Things like children and parents working closely together on a piece of writing, not because it’s homework and it must be done, but because a child really wanted to work on it at home and Mum or Dad came over to see what they were up to; or when I log in randomly during the weekend to find that several children have decided to get together in the drive and work collaboratively on a document they have decided to create for themselves - just for the sheer joy of creating. 


Like Simon above, while I am certainly busy creating learning tasks and managing the drive, the benefits are already very apparent after only a short amount of time. I look forward to seeing how this approach will shape the classroom in the weeks to come.
